Anthropic Backers See Billions At Last Round

Early investors in the AI giant are sitting on massive paper gains even before the anticipated public listing occurs.

The impending public listing of Anthropic, projected for the current year with a potential valuation reaching two trillion dollars, stands to generate substantial returns for its investor base. However, the financial windfall is already evident at the company's most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars. Even at this lower price point, the stakes held by various venture capitalists and early backers aggregate to billions of dollars. According to data from Bloomberg, the equity positions of key investors have appreciated significantly since their initial capital injections.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, exemplifies the long-term upside available to early entrants. He participated in Anthropic's Series A funding round in 2021, a period when PitchBook data indicated the startup was valued at 461 million dollars. His current holding represents approximately one percent of the company. At the latest private valuation, this modest percentage ownership translates to a stake worth nearly 10 billion dollars, reflecting the dramatic increase in the firm's worth over the past five years.

Late-stage institutional investors have also captured enormous value, despite entering the market at much higher entry prices. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed 6 billion dollars to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company's valuation had already reached 183 billion dollars. This substantial late-stage bet is currently valued at 17 billion dollars. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value if the initial public offering proceeds at the higher end of the projected range.

Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic's Series D financing, has demonstrated a significant cumulative investment strategy. The firm has poured more than 1 billion dollars into the AI laboratory over its tenure as an investor. This sustained capital deployment has resulted in a stake that is now valued at 14 billion dollars. The firm’s early leadership in a major funding round has positioned it to benefit from the company's rapid expansion and market dominance.

Sequoia Capital, a renowned venture capital firm, entered the Anthropic ecosystem more recently. The firm made its first investment in the AI lab earlier this year, at a stage when the company was already valued at 380 billion dollars. By committing 3 billion dollars to the round, Sequoia secured approximately one percent ownership. This entry point has already proven lucrative, as the investment has more than doubled in value based on the current private market pricing.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its position grow considerably. The company initially invested 35 million dollars in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round. Since that initial commitment, Sound Ventures has funneled an additional 400 million dollars into the business. This aggregate investment has produced a stake now worth billions of dollars. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm, though his earlier investments remain a significant part of the firm's portfolio history.

Spark Capital holds a unique position within Anthropic's governance structure, as it is the only known venture capital firm to possess a board seat. The firm invested 75 million dollars during the 2023 Series C round, when the company's valuation stood at 5 billion dollars. That initial position has expanded exponentially, ballooning more than ninetyfold to a current value of 7 billion dollars. This trajectory highlights the outsized returns possible for investors who participated in that specific mid-stage financing event.

The collective appreciation in these stakes underscores the financial momentum behind Anthropic's growth trajectory. As the company prepares for its public debut, the disparity between entry valuations and current market prices illustrates the magnitude of the gains awaiting these backers. Whether the final IPO price hits the two trillion dollar mark or settles lower, the existing private market valuations confirm that the core investor group is already sitting on a multi-billion dollar windfall.
