Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany will miss several weeks of football due to a viral infection, the club announced on Saturday.
Kompany collapsed on the training pitch on Friday. Before that, he coached the team from the dugout during Wednesday’s home match against Arsenal. He had missed the pre-match press conference for that game because he was already feeling unwell. After the Arsenal match, the 40-year-old Belgian said he ignored his body’s warning signs. He described the illness as a nasty virus that eventually forced him to stop. The Bayern Munich second team match scheduled for Friday was postponed following the collapse.
Director of Sport Max Eberl held a press conference on Saturday to update the media. He stated that Kompany is in a stable condition and is currently undergoing examinations. Eberl said the medical staff is working to identify the specific nature of the illness. He emphasized that the club will not set a recovery timeline until they understand the diagnosis. The absence is expected to last for weeks, not days. Eberl noted that the club did not seek a postponement for the upcoming league game. He suggested that a strong performance on the pitch would be the best way to aid Kompany’s recovery.
Aaron Danks, the assistant coach, will lead the team on the sideline for Sunday’s match. Danks, who is English, spoke with Kompany briefly on Friday. He said the conversation was focused on health rather than tactics. Danks confirmed that the coaching staff will manage all football operations together. He also announced that Joshua Kimmich, the Germany captain, will not play. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday.
Bayern Munich enters the match as the leader of the Bundesliga table. They hold a one-point advantage over Freiburg, their upcoming opponents. The club’s next major fixture is a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. That game is scheduled for November 3 in Madrid.
