Jordanian authorities detained three men on Monday morning in response to a deadly incident at a place of worship in the southern region.
The Public Security Directorate reported that the arrests followed a shootout at dawn in Karak governorate, located south of Amman. All three suspects sustained injuries during the operation, while no officers were hurt. The directorate stated that the men had been identified shortly after the initial incident and were apprehended using all available resources.
The original attack occurred on Friday in the village of Hammoud while a funeral service was underway at a Greek Orthodox church. Reports indicated that three individuals participated in the shooting. Karak maintains a small Christian demographic, making the target a focal point for local religious communities.
Mazen Al-Faraya, the Interior Minister, confirmed the identities of the detainees during a phone interview with the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka. He described the operation as a fulfillment of security duties, stating that the suspects offered fierce resistance before being subdued and taken into custody with severe injuries. Al-Faraya characterized the event as a terrorist act.
The Public Security Directorate issued a statement declaring that terrorism has no place among them and that the men met their just fate. The agency did not name the suspects or cite specific links to Islamist militant groups. King Abdullah II had previously instructed officials to act with an iron fist against those he labeled outlaws of Islam and individuals seeking to undermine national unity.
No group has formally claimed responsibility for the shooting, and no armed organization has been publicly accused of planning the attack.
