The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that a temporary ceasefire has been agreed upon for Oleshky, a southern Ukrainian city currently under Russian occupation. The arrangement is designed to allow humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation route. The announcement credited Mrs. Trump personally with brokering the deal, a role typically reserved for the president or senior diplomatic officials.
Under the terms described by her office, all military action in the city will cease starting Thursday, Oct. 29. Non-military civilian leaders from both nations will visit residents to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive coordinated transportation to their chosen destination, whether that is Russia or Ukraine. Mrs. Trump stated that she acted in her formal capacity as an "Exclusive Intermediary," working directly with leadership in both countries to define the technical procedures and timing.
In a written statement, Mrs. Trump characterized the situation in Oleshky as critical, describing it as a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. She noted that the remaining population consists largely of elderly residents requiring medical care, food, and clean water. She claimed that residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular attacks, and that her intervention was necessary to make evacuation possible. Newsmax, a conservative American media organization, has agreed to document the work of the joint teams.
Neither the Kremlin nor the Ukrainian government has publicly commented on the announcement. However, Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement exists for the occupied territory. White House communications director Steven Cheung praised the development on X, calling it "amazing news" and a "major, positive step towards peace." He stated that history would remember Mrs. Trump's tireless work in the process.
This diplomatic move follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also been involved in efforts to reunite 34 children with their families after their forcible removal by Russia. The ceasefire announcement arrives as President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine might need a new leader and downplaying the impact of Russian military actions.
The localized truce represents a specific, limited intervention rather than a comprehensive peace deal. It focuses on a single city and a specific timeframe. The next steps involve the coordination of aid delivery and the evacuation of civilians beginning Oct. 29.
