Daily life in Trappes, a suburb west of Paris, was disrupted on Friday when a driver opened fire on pedestrians while moving through the streets. The incident resulted in one death and five injuries, with at least three of the wounded in critical condition. For residents in the area, the event marked a sudden escalation in local security concerns, particularly given the broader social tensions currently affecting France.
The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time. The suspect drove a gray Renault Clio through Trappes and the neighboring town of La Verriere, firing at groups of people. Police sources indicated that the shooter fired in bursts, targeting locations such as a playground. The assault lasted for nearly fifteen minutes before five officers from the anti-crime brigade terminated the threat. The suspect was subsequently detained in Coignieres, a nearby municipality.
President Emmanuel Macron characterized the event as a premeditated racist terror attack. He stated that the victims were selected specifically because of their skin color or perceived religion. "There is no place for this in France," Macron noted after consulting with local officials and residents. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, described the scene as a random shooting intended to cause mass casualties. He called the relatively low number of fatalities a miracle and identified the incident as a likely first instance of an attempted mass killing driven by Islamophobia.
Medical details emerged over the course of the afternoon. Officials initially reported four injured, but the figure was later revised to five. Among the victims is a twelve-year-old girl who was shot eight times; she is currently in stable condition. The individual who died was described as being of African origin, while one of the critically wounded victims is of North African origin. Forensic teams examined evidence at a local gas station where the shooter had stopped.
Investigations are proceeding under a framework of terrorist enterprise. Prosecutors are examining whether the victims were targeted based on their real or assumed ethnicity or religion. Three associates of the suspect were placed in custody, though no specific reasons were provided. The suspect, who has not been publicly named, has four previous convictions that have since been cleared from his record. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed that all judicial and security resources are fully engaged.
The shooting takes place against a backdrop of rising domestic tension. France has recently experienced mass protests regarding the cost of living, accompanied by a week of overnight curfews. Further demonstrations by students, labor unions, and activists are scheduled for Saturday. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that approximately 70,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed to manage the crowds. He pledged a strict response to any violence or property damage, supported by elite units, helicopters, and armored vehicles.
Public institutions have also adjusted their schedules. Major museums in Paris, including the Louvre, have closed their doors. The Art Basel Paris event has canceled its weekend programming due to safety considerations. These measures reflect the heightened state of alert across the capital region as officials work to maintain public order during this critical period.
