Ukraine Methadone Plot: 17-Year-Old Detained After Two Soldiers Die

Police in Zhytomyr arrested a teenager accused of packaging lethal doses for Russian handlers, a case that illustrates the financial incentives driving sabotage on the front lines.

Ukrainian authorities detained a 17-year-old girl in Zhytomyr on Friday, alleging she acted as a courier for a Russian security operation that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was charged with aiding and abetting premeditated murder and distributing psychotropic substances. Prosecutors indicate she faces a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.

The investigation reveals a specific economic mechanism behind the killings. Police stated the teenager was paid a minimum of 5,000 hryvnias, approximately $111, for each successful delivery. She reportedly followed instructions from a Russian handler to package the substances and ship them via postal service.

The operation targeted soldiers recruited through Telegram. The recipients were told the parcels contained free medication and were instructed to ingest the contents while recording themselves on camera. Police noted that the capsules contained a lethal dose of methadone, a drug often used for addiction treatment but deadly in high concentrations. Two soldiers in the Zhytomyr region died from the poisoning.

Investigators say the arrest has allowed them to identify other recipients of the packages. Officials claim this intervention prevented four additional deaths across Ukraine. The suspect is also charged with shipping drugs and psychotropic substances for distribution, a charge that reflects the logistical nature of the crime rather than just the outcome.

Police warned that the Russian objective is to destabilize the domestic situation by killing personnel. They advised the public to avoid accepting food, drinks, or medication from unfamiliar sources. This case fits into a wider pattern of accusations between the two nations regarding the use of minors in sabotage operations since the conflict began in 2022.

Ukrainian authorities have opened thousands of investigations into collaboration with the enemy, regularly arresting individuals accused of working for Moscow. Previous incidents include the 2023 poisoning of the wife of Kyrylo Budanov, then head of military intelligence, and several of his GUR staff. In Paris, prosecutors also investigated the poisoning of a Russian journalist that year.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently told The Sun that he has survived at least five or six assassination attempts since the invasion began. The current case underscores the financial motivation behind some acts of sabotage, where large sums of money are exchanged for specific, high-stakes actions.
