A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong current pulled her from the water while she attempted to reach her two sons.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. near the southern tip of North Bimini. Officers at the Alice Town station received a call that a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. By the time they arrived, she had already been moved to a local clinic.
Police stated that the woman was snorkelling with her husband and two sons when the current carried the boys away. As she tried to reach them, the force said she was also swept out. Both children were pulled from the water and rescued.
At the clinic, a local doctor pronounced the woman dead after efforts to revive her failed. The police statement noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was brought ashore. Investigators do not suspect foul play and have ordered an autopsy to determine the specific cause of death.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is monitoring the case. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and are supporting the family.
North Bimini is located between the island of Andros and Miami, Florida. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The island group is also known for its connection to writer Ernest Hemingway and a shark research facility.
