Six thousand and seventeen feet above sea level, the Kehlsteinhaus stood for nearly nine decades before a fire reduced it to rubble on Friday night. Emergency services received alerts at 9:15 p.m. local time that the structure was completely engulfed in flames. No occupants were found inside, and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters faced logistical challenges due to local terrain conditions, which hindered the transport of trucks to the site. Police from Upper Bavaria South announced that the fire has triggered a criminal investigation. One suspect has been taken into custody.

Prosecutors identified the detainee as a 33-year-old German citizen with ties to the Berchtesgaden area. Although he does not currently reside there, authorities noted he showed signs of mental illness. He has been questioned and is scheduled for transfer to a psychiatric facility. Investigators are also examining the possibility of a political motive, citing the building’s historical significance. Police stated there is no current evidence that other individuals were involved.

Completed in 1938, the retreat served as a temporary seat of government for Adolf Hitler. The building survived Allied bombing campaigns during World War II, leaving it largely in its original state. In recent years, it operated as a tourist destination, restaurant, and beer garden. Its official website described the site as one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hitler era, symbolizing the insanity of the regime.

Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s interior minister, confirmed the commitment to reconstruct the site. Speaking to reporters in Berchtesgaden, Herrmann stated that the future design would be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. He emphasized that the goal is not to leave a ruin behind. According to the Associated Press, Herrmann expressed confidence that a sensible solution could be found.

The minister also stressed the importance of continuing the work of remembrance. The decision to rebuild follows the detention of the suspect and the confirmation that the structure was fully consumed by fire. The site remains a focal point for both tourism and historical reflection in the Bavarian Alps.
