Mbappe Makes Ballon d'Or Case Without a Trophy to His Name

The Real Madrid forward has 22 World Cup goals and league scoring titles, but no silverware from the season the award covers.

Kylian Mbappe heads into Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London with the strongest individual numbers in the game and no team trophy to show for the 2025-26 season. He is not the bookmakers' favorite, and he did not top the scoring charts in every competition, but he has argued his case at every turn. The prize carries no cash award, though it raises a player's market value and standing.

His central claim rests on the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe took the Golden Boot for the second straight tournament and became the competition's all-time leading scorer with 22 goals in 22 matches. Lionel Messi holds second place on 21, and former Germany striker Miroslav Klose sits third on 16. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month. Asked by RFI who he was voting for, he replied: "Myself."

Club production supports the same argument. Mbappe scored 25 goals to lead La Liga's scoring chart and added 15 in the Champions League, where he also topped the rankings. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," he said.

The gap in his record is silverware. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga under Xabi Alonso and then Alvaro Arbeloa, and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. That extended the club's wait for a major trophy to a second season. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and to England in the third-place playoff.

Contenders around him collected titles. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane took three trophies with Bayern, among them the Bundesliga. Mbappe has answered that tally with a different kind of argument: "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI, saying individual performance and standout moments are what register for an award of this kind. His club manager, Jose Mourinho, backed him, saying, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team."

Past results cut against him. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the last decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, helped Paris Saint-Germain to a first Champions League title. Rodri won Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City before taking the prize two years ago.

One precedent points the other way. Cristiano Ronaldo won in 2013 without a major trophy, his second Ballon d'Or ending Messi's four-year run. Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country that season; Portugal went out in the 2012 World Cup playoffs and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Mbappe has nine nominations and a third-place finish in 2023.
