U.S. Warship Set to Stop 50 Yards From Cuban Coast

Secretary of State Marco Rubio invites Cuban reformers to form a direct partnership with the CIA as the Trump administration escalates economic and military pressure.

President Donald Trump stated on Friday that a U.S. Navy warship will stop approximately 50 yards off the Cuban coast. This specific distance was cited at a campaign rally in South Florida to illustrate the physical proximity of American naval assets to the island.

The declaration follows a direct appeal by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Cuban citizens. In a post on X, Rubio urged those seeking "positive change" to form a "discrete partnership with the CIA." The Central Intelligence Agency immediately reposted the message, providing a video in Spanish with instructions on how to contact the agency. This marks a visible shift toward direct engagement with domestic opposition groups.

Rubio justified the outreach by citing the "disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few." The administration frames this move as the next phase in a strategy to displace Cuba’s current government. The diplomatic push coincides with intensified economic measures announced the previous week, including new sanctions on Cuba’s state-run bank, which Washington linked to Iran.

Domestic conditions in Cuba have deteriorated under the weight of the U.S. embargo. Prices for essential goods have risen sharply, and medical access has contracted. Reports indicate that residents now wait in long lines for bread and doctor appointments, reflecting the tangible impact of the pressure campaign on daily life.

Trump described the intended sequence of events with a degree of theatricality. He said the ships deployed near the Strait of Hormuz would pass Cuba, with one stopping close to shore. He claimed the crew would raise their hands, after which Rubio would be sent in to "finish up the deal." This narrative connects the military buildup in the Middle East with the strategic goals in the Caribbean.

Cuban officials rejected the display of force and the diplomatic overture. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla responded on X, stating that the island rejects threats stemming from U.S. ambitions. He characterized the Cuban coastline as rugged and inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions and a desire for domination. The minister’s reply served as a formal rebuttal to the president’s rally remarks.

The U.S. strategy now combines targeted financial sanctions with a public invitation for intelligence cooperation. The 50-yard benchmark provides a concrete metric for the naval standoff, while the CIA’s video instructions offer a practical mechanism for contact. These parallel tracks illustrate the administration’s reliance on both economic leverage and direct liaison with local actors.
