Campaign Rhetoric Frames 2026 Vote as Existential Crisis

Analysts warn that labeling the upcoming election as Israel's most fateful in history elevates political competition to a survival issue, complicating the acceptance of defeat.

Danny Kushmaro introduces nightly election segments by declaring the upcoming vote the most fateful in Israel's history. This characterization has become a standard refrain among campaign actors, who frequently label the current contest as the most important in the nation's past.

Kohelet advises against romanticizing previous eras, a perspective that applies to the current electoral cycle. Assuming this specific vote holds more weight than all predecessors is an unwise calculation. Every election tends to feel like the defining moment of its time, yet historical perspective is necessary to maintain balance.

The language of fateful elections transforms political battles into existential wars. This framing turns the competition between pro-Netanyahu and anti-Netanyahu blocs into a matter of national survival. Defeat becomes difficult to view as a correctable setback. Instead, losing parties may perceive the outcome as a threat to the country's viability, making it harder to accept the results.

Since Naftali Bennett formed his government in 2021, Israel has struggled with the question of whether losing parties will concede power. Before that government was sworn in, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded its formation the greatest election fraud. He referred to broken campaign promises rather than stolen ballots, but the message cast a legally formed government as illegitimate. The opposition subsequently worked to bring the Bennett government down, with the Knesset serving as the main arena for conflict.

The coalition's slim majority made every vote consequential, leading the opposition to vote against legislation it supported to weaken the administration. In recordings published in May 2022, Likud MK Miri Regev defended voting against measures benefiting soldiers and vulnerable groups, citing the overriding objective of toppling the coalition. The government spent much of its short life fighting for survival.

Benjamin Netanyahu won the 2022 election and formed a hard-right government, shifting the political dynamic. Yair Lapid conceded the election and arranged an orderly handover. However, as opposition to the judicial overhaul brought masses into the streets, the language of illegitimacy re-emerged. At a massive demonstration in Tel Aviv in April 2023, former Shin Bet director Yuval Diskin stated that while the government had been elected legally, it was morally illegitimate due to its appalling composition and reprehensible actions.
