Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has expressed deep distress regarding the ongoing investigation into her father, Thomas Markle, by authorities in the Philippines. The duchess released a statement on Friday to address the situation, noting that the alleged possession of child sexual abuse materials is a significant development in a long-standing family matter. Her comments come as the Philippine Department of Justice confirms that a formal inquiry is now underway into the octogenarian American national.
The first key point of the statement concerns the timeline of the allegations. Meghan revealed that she was made aware of the claims back in 2018, rather than during the recent media reports. She explained that a letter containing troubling details was sent to the Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit at that time. According to the duchess, this letter was subsequently shared with her, and she was given assurances that the matter was being actively investigated by British authorities.
However, the second key point highlights a gap in the official record. It is understood that the Metropolitan Police did not conduct a formal investigation into Thomas Markle and is not currently doing so. A spokesperson for the force acknowledged the situation, stating that officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command helped pass on the letter in 2018. The police are now undertaking internal enquiries to confirm exactly what steps were taken following the receipt of that correspondence.
The third key point addresses the duchess's relationship with her father. Meghan stated that her decision to distance herself from Thomas Markle was made specifically to protect her children. She noted that despite years of media distortion, the primary reason for limiting his contact with their children was their safety. She expressed hope that the public can now understand this motivation, which she described as the single driving force behind her choice.
Context for the current investigation emerged from reports that Thomas Markle Jr. reported his father to Philippine authorities. The younger man allegedly found child abuse materials in storage boxes at the family home in Cebu province. He reportedly discovered some of the content after switching on an old cell phone while his father was in the United States receiving treatment for a stroke and blood clot. The Daily Mail reported that Thomas Markle Sr. denied the allegations, calling them sick lies and stating he had never downloaded such materials.
Philippine state media confirmed the investigation on Friday, noting that the Department of Justice's anti-trafficking task force is handling the case. Thomas Markle Jr. had previously reported the findings to an FBI hotline, the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children, and state police in Pennsylvania in July. As the probe continues, Meghan stated her sincerest hope is that justice is fully served, emphasizing that the priority must remain the safety and protection of innocent children.
