Philippine authorities are currently conducting a full digital forensic examination of a computer linked to Prince Harry's father-in-law, Thomas Markle Sr. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced that national police have secured the device to analyze the data. He expects the results of this technical review to be available within one week. This official intervention confirms that the matter has moved from media speculation to a formal state inquiry in Cebu.
The investigation follows claims made by Markle Sr's son, Thomas Markle Jr, who told detectives in the Philippines that he discovered hundreds or potentially thousands of child sexual abuse images. The alleged stash was found on computers and mobile phones stored in four large boxes at the senior Markle's former residence. Markle Jr has also contacted the FBI, which stated it will support local authorities and look into any federal violations of US law. Philippine officials, including Undersecretary Nicholas Ty, confirmed that a specific taskforce for human trafficking and child sexual exploitation is now handling the case.
In a statement released on October 23, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, said she is deeply distressed by the allegations. She revealed that the Metropolitan Police made her aware of disturbing claims against her father as early as 2018. A letter sent to the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection unit was shared with her shortly after her wedding. Meghan said she was assured the allegations were being investigated at the time. The Metropolitan Police is currently making internal inquiries to confirm whether officers in that unit were involved in passing the letter to her.
Markle Sr has vigorously denied the accusations from a rehabilitation center in Florida, where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after a leg amputation. He described himself as shocked and hurt by the news. He told the Daily Mail that the computers in question had not been in his possession since he moved from Rosarito, Mexico, to the Philippines in January 2025 for a fresh start. He returned to the US in May following a stroke. He called the accusations sick lies and said he could never do what he is being accused of.
Family dynamics have added complexity to the situation. Samantha Markle, the duchess's half-sister, defended her father and accused Markle Jr of making up lies for financial gain. She noted that the computers were out of Markle Sr's possession for two years, suggesting there was ample room for tampering. The brothers have been estranged from their daughter and sister since the father missed the 2018 wedding to health grounds. Meghan stated that her decision to limit contact with him was intended to protect her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, whom he has never met.
The duchess's spokesperson noted that she could not speak publicly in 2018 because doing so might have jeopardized potential investigations or exposed her to legal action. She expressed hope that justice will be fully served and that the safety of children remains the top priority for all involved agencies.
