Residents of the Alūksne district in Latvia confirmed the physical presence of a crashed drone on Saturday, 24 October. The National Armed Forces announced the discovery of the wreckage, which resolved the immediate uncertainty following the initial airspace breach. Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured and that local infrastructure sustained no damage.
The timeline of the event began on Sunday, 18 October. At that time, an unknown noise resembling an explosion was reported, prompting the National Armed Forces and the State Police to launch a search for a potential crash site. Investigators halted the operation after two days. The military stated that the data available at the time was insufficient to determine the nature of the incident.
The discovery of the debris six days after the initial alert has triggered a new phase of inquiry. Authorities have opened an investigation into the specific circumstances of the crash. A parallel internal review is now active to assess the factors that contributed to the event and how the initial response unfolded.
This event follows a similar airspace violation in neighboring Lithuania. On 18 October, wreckage from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials stated the drone entered the country from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius confirmed that the Lithuanian drone contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, the spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He noted that Ukraine expressed regret regarding the event. The sequence of drone detections in the Baltic region highlights the continued pressure on national airspace in the region.
