OpenAI Seeks $30 Billion Injection at Record-Breaking Valuation

The AI giant is negotiating a private funding round that could surpass previous valuations and set a new benchmark for upcoming tech listings.

OpenAI appears poised to prioritize a massive private capital raise over its previously anticipated public market debut. According to sources familiar with the matter, the company is in the final stages of negotiating a round that would secure up to $30 billion. This move suggests a strategic shift, as the AI lab looks to bolster its balance sheet without the immediate scrutiny of a public offering.

The proposed valuation sits at a staggering $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. This figure is being led by Coatue Management and includes participation from investors based in the UAE. While these terms are still under negotiation, the scale of the deal indicates a continued appetite for high-stakes investment in the artificial intelligence sector, even as other firms prepare to go public.

A month prior, Bloomberg reported similar figures, suggesting OpenAI was targeting a $1.4 trillion valuation for a comparable $30 billion raise. The slight discrepancy in reported valuations highlights the fluidity of current negotiations. Both outlets note that the final terms remain subject to change, leaving room for potential adjustments before a definitive agreement is reached.

Beyond the capital itself, the UAE component of the deal may carry additional strategic weight. CNBC reports that the funding could be paired with an agreement to secure additional computing capacity from the region. This linkage suggests that the investment is not purely financial but also operational, aiming to expand OpenAI's infrastructure capabilities in a key market.

If the $1.25 trillion valuation is finalized, OpenAI would claim the title of the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would significantly raise the bar for its forthcoming Initial Public Offering. The company had already filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a March funding round that valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion on a post-money basis.

The high valuation also casts a long shadow over the public debut of its primary competitor, Anthropic. Industry observers believe Anthropic is closer to materializing its own IPO, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could appear at any moment. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public listing.

Anthropic recently raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a move widely interpreted as its final major private round before going public. Like OpenAI, it filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. As both giants navigate their paths to the public markets, the interplay between their valuations and private funding strategies will likely determine the new standard for tech company worth.

OpenAI has declined to comment on the reports. The outcome of these negotiations will not only define the company's near-term financial stability but also signal where the industry is heading in terms of capital structure and public market expectations.
